2015 - The Year That Was

Dec 29, 2015

2015 could not have started any better with Danaura continuing his winning run taking out the $50,000 Mandurah Cup at Pinjarra Park on the 4th of January. Unfortunately injury stopped his preparation at that point but we are hopeful this immensely talented son of Danzero will make it back to the track in 2016.

With Lost Heritage now wearing the Gold Front colours, it was fantastic to see him back in the winner’s circle at Ascot in February. Lost Heritage only ran 4 times in 2015, and apart from his win his other 3 starts were all at Ascot where he was runner up on 2 occasions and placed third at his only other run.

What a year it was with Gold Front owned Dissident being crowned Australian Horse of the Year and Victorian Horse of the Year, after winning four G1 races in the 2014/15 racing season. Dissident is set for a great career at Stud standing at Newgate Farm.

The Melbourne Spring Carnival is the pinnacle of Australian racing and Gold Front was thrilled to have two horse racing Cup week. Our imported stayer Excess Knowledge trained by the first lady of Australian racing Gai Waterhouse, got over the line by a nose, and then survived a protest to take out the Group 3 Lexus Stakes on Derby Day. This win secured his spot in Australia’s most famous horse race, the Group 1 Melbourne Cup. Backing up on the Tuesday he produced an extraordinary performance to finish seventh, beaten just 3 lengths by fairy tale winner Prince Of Penzance. It was a great thrill to have our first runner in the Melbourne Cup, and we could not be prouder of Excess Knowledge. During 2015 Excess Knowledge also won the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude over 1500m at Rosehill and we are really excited about what he might do in 2016 with Gai's main target being another tilt at the Melbourne Cup.

The excitement on Melbourne Cup day didn’t end with Excess Knowledge. Our exciting 4 year old Awesome Rock bred by Gold Front by Fastnet Rock out of Awesome Planet produced an exceptional run to win the James Boags ‘s Symphony Stakes (LR) over 1800m, defeating Godolphin's stakes winner Malice. Both Awesome Rock and Excess Knowledge are magnificent individuals with the pedigree and conformation to be exciting stallion prospects in the future and Gold Front look forward to them both adding to their already impressive race track records in 2016.

While every racehorse owner dreams of victory in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington, there is nothing better than a day out at the races at one of Western Australia’s picturesque provincial tracks. We travelled to Narrogin for their iconic race and pace meeting on Australia day, and brought home a win with Missilpop. Stephansdom was also a winner at Pinjarra, El Mejor at Geraldton and Gold Opera at Northam.

Gold Front also took a team of 7 horses up to Broome in May this year, for yet another successful season, with Masahiko, Slingsby and Hashtag Lad all bringing home wins for us. The Broome team are all back in work again, and ready for another successful season in 2016.

Big Red Costa, trained by Wally Mitchell was our last winner for the year. With three placings at the provincials in his 3 previous runs, it was great to see him lead all the way and win over 1500m at Ascot. He is an exciting 3 year old, he has been given a break after contesting the Group 2 WA Guineas and he represents another exciting prospect for us in 2016.
